As there are some book-loving geeks among my contacts:

I'm looking for a web databse solution to create a cataligue of all my books. It should …

be open source so I don't have to use a commercial solution but can install it on my server
be able to pull titles and maybe even covers and/or short abstracts from public sources if presented an ISBN, EAN or UPC. Not Amazon, if possible. Sources for German books must be present.
provide an Android client that can scan barcodes so I can scan the titles directly at the shelves. Or at least a mobile web client where I can enter the numbers manually.
maybe provide a possibility to enter books I want to read at some time but don't own right now.

Does anybody have tips if something at least partly like that exists?

@zottel, have you ever checked "Zotero" [ http://www.zotero.org/ ], which can be used as a online database as well as privately adapted to your specific kind of storage possibilities. As there are a lot of participants you may find German articles and titles as well on it, and there is also the possibility to be directly connected with db-s of libraries (I am not sure to what extend). It's open source, freeware, and can be used by an extension tool on several browsers, e.g. FF.

#Zotero offers to add multiple content entries/items via Identifier. Just checked the Z.-FF-add-on with 9753160623 and it works. I know Z is not an OS-Web-DB solution. But the solution is powered by standards and a huge budget.

Thanks for the tips. I think Zotero is not the right thing for me as more or less perfect data will be required. I was a bookseller once, and I like my bibliographical data to be absolutely complete.

As a complete library system, Koha might actually be a little too much, but I think I'll try a test installation.

But first, I'll wait until @Charles Roth is back from his trip. I remember his post about that, too, but I can't find it anymore. He'll probably be able to give me a few more tips on the matter.

So, you're looking for pretty much an open source online catalog to keep digital books, have suppotr for public sources with ISBN/EAN/UPC and can be downloaded with an Android client? Hmm...honestly, I can't think of anything beyond doing some sort of custom solution.

This sounds like an appealing idea for a hobby project, though. I remember a few years back how frustrated I was at not finding something similar.

@Sean Tilley Not digital books, but real ones. I don't want to read them online, I just want to have a catalog with all my books (including ebooks, but not for directly reading online) that I can access from everywhere.

I know that solutions on the smartphone exist, and others that run on my desktop and can be filled using a smartphone, and others that are a commercial ("free") web service and can be accessed via smartphone or web.

I want something like the third, but I want to install it on my own server.

@Haakon Meland Eriksen Nice, but only on the smartphone. I wouldn't want to lose all my data because I lose my phone or it crashes etc. (Yes, I could do backups, but I normally don't because I rely on everything being in the cloud, too.)
